Sponsor a Book Drive

Thank you for your desire to helping low-income and at-risk kids gets the books they need. It would be wonderful if Book Drive For Kids could have a book drive in your area.

The two most popular and effective ways of collecting children’s books are:

A Central Collection Point is placing a banner and a book collection bin at a central location where people drop off their books.  The Central Collection Point can be at: school, office, club, sporting event, civic group (Boys & Girls Scouts etc) or church.  They can be sponsored by: individuals, youth groups, businesses, classroom at school, or any other type
of organization that has a desire to help kids receive books.

Door-to-door drive where a flyer and a Wal Mart style bag is hung on doors.  The flyer explains that on a certain date someone will come back and collect the books.  The home owner simply puts their books in the bag and places it on their front door steps the morning of the collection. This works best when there is a group of volunteers involved that can cover a large area at one time.  This type of event can also be done by an individual who wants to collect books in their neighborhood.

To get things started:

  1. BOOK DRIVE FOR KIDS would need you or someone to act as the team captain and help organize the event and get the word out to the public.
  2. Decide on what type of event would best suit your needs. Give yourself a month or two to get everything planned.  If you are doing a Central Collection Point event pick out the location to place your banner and collection bin.
  3. Set a date! The date needs to have a starting date and an ending date.  If you pick the Central Collection Point event, this type of event typically last from two weeks to over a month.  It may take a little time before donors realize what your event is all about and it also gives them time to round up their books.
  4. Create the flyer: BOOK DRIVE FOR KIDS can email you a .pdf flyer (letter size).  The flyer has a place in the middle where you can put in the details of your event.  Make sure you give yourself enough time to print out how many you will need.  If you like, BOOK DRIVE FOR KIDS will create them for you and send them to you.
  5. Announce your event to all your friends! Your book drive will only be a success if you get the word out as much as you can.  Ask them to not only give books but to volunteer their time and energy.  Remember, children will do without necessary reading materials unless you get involved!
  6. Start collecting! Make sure you tell everyone why you are hosting the book drive.
  7. Share the need! The need is simple: kids need books.  But many low-income children do not have them.  Without books to read, literacy suffers – and when literacy suffers, education suffers and opportunities decline – for generations.  Reading programs don’t do much good if children don’t have books to read.
